At the last minute, the day before our planned shoot, I had the idea for this shot. Julie is an artist as well as a model, and I thought it'd be cool to showcase this aspect of the woman I'd be working with. It's easy to consider models blank slates or canvases with which to represent our vision; and so glimpses of who they really are is obscured by the work we're collaborating in creation. I just wanted to represent her as an artist and model in as simple a way as I could - I had an easel laying around for communicating the artist facet of this composite and the rest was pretty easy to achieve.
